Section titled “What immigrants should know if they are arrested/detained:”

REMEMBER

  • You have the right to remain silent.

  • Do not say anything about your immigration status or where you were born.

  • If you have valid immigration documents, show them.

    If You Are Arrested:

  • Tell the police or ICE if you are the caretaker of a minor child or an incapacitated adult.

  • Ask to speak with your attorney or to make a phone call.

  • Contact your trusted friend or family member who knows the number of your lawyer and your emergency plan. Memorize the number of your emergency contact.

  • Contact your consulate. You have the right to tell the agent to inform the consulate of your arrest. The consulate can help you find an attorney if you do not have one and may offer to contact your family.

  • Do not sign anything you do not understand before consulting with a lawyer!
